US Naval Academy Appointment

Padua Academy is proud to announce that senior Mary Drost ’26 has earned and accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy—an extraordinary honor that reflects her exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to service. Even more remarkably, Mary also earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, a distinction achieved by only a select group of candidates nationwide each year.

The United States Naval Academy’s highly competitive admissions process typically admits just 8–10% of applicants. Candidates must demonstrate excellence across multiple areas, including rigorous academic performance, leadership, physical fitness, and moral character. Mary’s selection is a testament to her ability to meet—and exceed—these demanding standards.

At Padua, Mary has distinguished herself as valedictorian of the Class of 2026, showcasing her dedication to scholarship and intellectual curiosity. Beyond the classroom, she is a first team all-state athlete in both cross country and track, demonstrating discipline, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. She is also the recipient of the Diocese of Wilmington’s St. Francis de Sales Medal, recognizing her outstanding achievements in faith, service, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

Mary’s path to the Naval Academy included securing a congressional nomination, which she received from Representative Andy Harris of Maryland’s 1st District. She also successfully completed a rigorous series of applications, interviews, medical evaluations, and fitness assessments—each step designed to evaluate not only accomplishments, but character and potential for leadership.

During a special recognition ceremony at Padua, Mary was celebrated by members of the school community as well as her family and mentors. In attendance were her parents, Katy and Michael Drost, and her grandparents, Ron and Claudette Larose, who traveled from Massachusetts to share in this milestone. Mr. Larose, a United States Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, added a meaningful connection to Mary’s commitment to military service. Also present was Mr. Kevin Worsh, United States Naval Academy Blue-Gold Officer, who played an important role in supporting Mary throughout the application process.

Mary’s teacher, Mrs. Christine Campbell, offered remarks during the ceremony, reflecting on Mary’s character, determination, and the positive impact she has made on the Padua community. Her words highlighted what so many at Padua have come to know—Mary is not only an accomplished student, but a young woman of integrity, humility, and purpose.

An appointment to the Naval Academy is more than an academic achievement—it is a commitment to serve. As a midshipman, Mary will undergo four years of intensive academic, military, and physical training, preparing her to lead as an officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. Following graduation, she will serve a minimum of five years on active duty, dedicating herself to the protection and service of our nation.

Mary’s accomplishments speak volumes, but it is her desire to grow, to serve, and to be the best version of herself that truly sets her apart. Her journey is one defined by purpose and promise.

Padua Academy congratulates Mary on this remarkable achievement. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to all she will accomplish in the years ahead.
