#PaduaPROUD of Our Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Medalists for 2021

As we kick off the first week of Black History Month, we'd like to share with you two of our Gold Key winning entries from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Padua's very own Cheyenne Hudson '21 created a "Beats by Dr. Dre" ad featuring an illustrative depiction of a young African-American woman. Throughout the history of advertising, it has been well documented that women of color have been both under-represented and when depicted at all, have taken the form of hurtful stereotypes.

While "multicultural marketing" began to become popular in the 1990s, trying to reach a multicultural market has not meant that black and brown women are yet represented equally or accurately. Sadly stereotypes born from the past are still perpetuated in today's advertising industry and continue to underlie many modern day media products.

Hailey Brooks '21 re-envisioned the cover for this school's year summer reading, "Piecing Me Together" by Renée Watson. In early Spring of 2020, Padua’s Summer Reading Committee selected “Piecing Me Together,” an award-winning teen novel by Renee Watson and winner of the Coretta Scott King Award and Newbery Honor. The reading selection, a Summer reading book club and book cover design project have been just some of many activities with the goal of collectively working towards furthering diversity, equity and inclusivity on Broom Street. We'll be sharing more on our efforts throughout this month and as the school year goes on.
