2025-26 IDEA Award Recipient

Mr. Ray Helie, 2025-26 IDEA Award Recipient

Padua Academy is proud to recognize Mr. Ray Helie, teacher in our mathematics department, as a 2025-2026 IDEA Award honoree presented by the Diocese of Wilmington Board of Catholic Schools. Mr. Helie exemplifies the spirit of innovation, faith, and dedication that defines excellence in Catholic education.

Mr. Helie teaches two of the most rigorous courses offered at Padua—AP Calculus BC and AP Physics. When unexpectedly called upon to take over AP Physics, he stepped forward without hesitation. Under his leadership, students achieved a near 100% pass rate, an unprecedented accomplishment that speaks to both his mastery of the subject and his ability to make complex material accessible.

Students consistently highlight his unique approach to teaching. Rather than emphasizing memorization, Mr. Helie focuses on developing deep understanding. As one student shared, “Rather than solely having us memorize the rules of calculus, he teaches us the meaning behind each formula and how to properly think through challenging questions.”

His commitment to innovation extends beyond the classroom. Mr. Helie was part of a cohort of mathematics teachers who earned First Place in the Delaware STEM Award, recognizing excellence in teaching, collaboration, and student engagement. He also leads professional development workshops for fellow AP teachers, helping colleagues effectively use tools like AP Classroom and data-driven instruction to support student success across disciplines.

Mr. Helie’s classroom is also a place where faith is present in meaningful and authentic ways. He begins each class with a thoughtful prayer and models a life of quiet spirituality. Students recognize and appreciate this balance, noting that he not only challenges them academically but also supports their growth as individuals grounded in faith.

Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Helie serves as advisor to Padua’s FTC Robotics Team. Through this work, he mentors students in engineering, programming, and problem-solving while fostering teamwork and perseverance. His dedication creates an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired. One student reflected, “Robotics is my favorite after-school activity thanks to his humor and optimism… Padua wouldn’t be the same without him.”

Mr. Helie’s impact is also felt among his colleagues. Known for his collaborative spirit and technical expertise, he supports teachers across departments in integrating technology and improving instruction. His generosity extends even further—quietly and consistently modeling compassion and inclusion in ways that reflect Padua’s Catholic mission.

In 2026, Mr. Helie celebrates his 20th year teaching at Padua—a milestone that reflects not only his longevity, but the lasting impact he has had on generations of students and colleagues.

As Mrs. Markham shared in her nomination, Mr. Helie’s work reflects “the very best of what it means to innovate with purpose, develop with intention, and educate with faith at the center of every student he serves.”

We are grateful for Mr. Helie’s dedication to his students, his colleagues, and the Padua community. His influence will continue to shape generations of Padua students, both in and beyond the classroom.

Presented by the Diocese of Wilmington Board of Catholic Schools, this award recognizes teachers who demonstrate excellence in teaching, contribution, and achievements on behalf of Catholic school education in our diocese.  Award recipients are teachers nominated by teachers.
