Business

  • Economics

    This course is designed to introduce students to basic economic concepts. Students will study the economy, its impact on their lives, and the effects their choices and decisions have on the economy as a whole.  We will compare several different economic systems and understand how households, businesses and government interact with each other in our economy and how their interdependence affects prices and the supply and demand for goods and services. 

    This course is offered to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades

    Prerequisite:  Minimum average of 80 in College Prep Social Studies and/or departmental approval.

  • Personal Finance

    Understanding and managing personal finances are key to one’s future financial success.  This course provides a foundational understanding of real world topics including:  income, money management, credit, debt, saving and investing.  Students will learn about the benefits of savings and checking accounts as well as the various types of banking institutions.   They will also gain an understanding of credit and debt, and the importance of establishing good credit. Students will explore common types of investment opportunities and the risk and reward involved with each.  Students will leave this course with the skills needed to make more informed financial decisions that will directly influence future career and financial goals.     

    This course is offered to students in 11th & 12th grades 

    Prerequisite:  Minimum average of 80 in College Prep Social Studies and/or departmental approval.

  • Business Leadership (Honors)

    Business Leadership students will oversee the operation of the School Store and will have the opportunity to guide the overall direction of the Store (and the online store) throughout the year.  This course will provide practical, hands-on experience managing a fully operational retail store allowing them to develop leadership skills and make business decisions in the areas of:  retail operations and management, product selection, product lifecycle, pricing, analytics, budgeting, marketing & advertising.  This class fosters a team environment with open communication and collaboration.  

    This course is offered to students in 12th grade. 

    Prerequisite:  Economics or Business Fundamentals
  • Entrepreneurship (Honors - Dual Enrollment UD)

    This honors course is a full-year dual enrollment elective offered in partnership with the University of Delaware.  Students can earn 3 college credits at a reduced rate.  This course curriculum cultivates the development of an entrepreneurial mindset and develops the skills necessary for identifying new opportunities and solving real-world problems.  Students work through the entrepreneurship process by creating their own idea for a new business or social venture and put it into action by participating in the Diamond Challenge hosted by the Horn Entrepreneurship Institute at UD.  Students develop key life skills including:  creative problem-solving, leadership, evidence-based decision-making, communication and teamwork.
    This course is offered to students in 12th grade.

    Prerequisite:  Class size is limited.  Final approval of enrollment by course instructor and the registrar.

    Additional Fee:  There is an additional fee of $500 to earn 3 college credits, however, you can still enroll in the course without choosing to earn college credits.
