This makes her one of only 15,000 Semi Finalists notified that they had advanced to Finalist standing. Sonia now represents less than 1% of the 1.6 million students entered in the program to receive this prestigious honor. The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955.

She will be asked to name an influential educator.  That person will be invited to join Paige at a formal dinner in DC.

About the National Merit Scholarship Award

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
Beginning in March and continuing through mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately 7,600 Finalists at their home addresses that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. If Sonia is selected, she will receive one of the following three types of Merit Scholarships:

  • National Merit® $2500 Scholarships

  • Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards

  • College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
