This indoor track season has been truly special for Padua’s distance relays. It started back in December where we surprised ourselves and ran a US #1 time in the 4x800m relay in our very first meet.  Since then, we went on to set the US #1 time in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) at the Yale Track Classic Invitational against a loaded field of top US ranked teams. Those performances surprised not only us but our competitors too and even got the attention of meet directors of big track events held at the Armory in New York. As a result, these young ladies received special invitations to compete at both the Dr. Sander Invitational and the historic Millrose Games, a meet that dates back to 1908 and hosts only the best in the United States.

The Dr. Sander Invitational took place on Saturday, Jan 27 and was filled with team USA, college, and high school athletes alike.  The Padua 4x800m team of freshman Judy McLaughlin, senior Amber Owens, junior Lizzy Bader, and senior Lydia Olivere toed the line with another loaded field of ten teams with performances all ranked in the top 12 in the US.   This time, our team was the top seed going into the race and everyone knew who to watch. It was a bit nerve-racking for our girls but once the gun went off, it was business as usual with every one of our girls running a season-best split, crushing both their old time by 11 seconds as well as the entire field by 6 seconds, posting a team performance of 9:09.56.  That time is good for a new US #1 time this season, a new Delaware State record, as well as a new school record.

These young ladies, for the time being, are the fastest quartet in the US for both the 4x800m and the DMR. They truly are a special group of runners and are blazing a path for their teammates to follow as well as putting Padua’s track program in the national spotlight.
