IMG_2089Padua’s cross country team stormed into Winterthur with one purpose – to become the 2017 New Castle County champions – and they did just that.  Once the starting gun fired, the Padua runners did not hesitate taking charge of the field.

The varsity team had four of the top five finishers in a race with approximately 200 athletes.  The team and individual champions both won big! Lydia Olivere led the team winning her third NCC championship in 17:41, her fastest time for Winterthur’s hilly 5k course (good for #2 All-Time).  She’s one of three girls to be a three-time New Castle County champion.  Lydia couldn’t have been happier when she turned around in the finishing chute to see her teammate Lizzy Bader come around the final turn finishing 2nd overall in her personal best time ever on this challenging course in 18:21.  They were quickly joined by Anna Cleary (4th, 19:16), and Alicia LeNoir (5th, 19:19).  Katie Hally finished 13th in 19:52 followed closely by freshman Judy McLaughlin (15th – 20:08).  Jackie Holowka rounded out the varsity team (43rd-21:44).   All of these ladies ran personal bests for this course and six of them earned All-County honors.
The JV team was just as dominating also winning both the team and individuals championships.
Bridget Kennedy led wire to wire in her best cross country race ever winning in 21:12 a personal best on this course (and would’ve placed her 35th in Varsity race).   She was followed up by Clare Mazzeo who had her best XC season finishing 3rd.  Senior, Captain Jules Lenoir also had a strong finish placing 4th overall.  Kelly Shannon having a breakout season finished in 6th overall and Annie Shea, Moira Smith, and Abby Vanderloo finished 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively.
The Pandas absolutely “wowed” the crowd with their performances. The team is now preparing for the State Championship to be held on Saturday, November 11th at Killens Pond.
